In what was the most bittersweet moment of the night, Jennifer Lopez reprised the role that propelled her to stardom and paid tribute to Selena Quintanilla at the Billboard Latin Music Awards, which aired Thursday (April 30) on Telemundo.
And she did it with Los Dinos, the family band that backed up the Mexican-American Tejano star, who was tragically murdered 20 years ago.
A montage of photos of Selena flashed on the screens and then Lopez came out and channeled the fallen star with a series of her hits: "Como La Flor," "Bidi Bidi Bam Bam," "Amor Prohibido," "I Could Fall In Love," ending, perhaps appropriatey, with "No Me Queda Mas."

The 30 Most Influential Latin Artists of All Time

#15 Selena
On March 31, 1995, Selena Quintanilla Perez -- known as Selena -- was shot and killed by the former president of her fan club (now serving a life sentence) at the age of 23. Selena made history, garnering Tejano music mainstream success it had never seen before -- or since. She landed five No. 1 singles on Billboard's Hot Latin Tracks chart and a Billboard 200 No. 1 with her final studio LP, Dreaming of You, and 20 years after her death remains a superstar.

Why Selena still matters

For many Mexican Americans, Selena Quintanilla-Perez, Queen of Tejano music and the first Latin artist to hit the Billboard 200 chart, was way more than a pop star: She was a game changer for their identity, proof that the way they looked and sounded was good enough.
Maybe that's why, a full 20 years after, Selena can still draw a crowd. Last weekend, some 50,000 people descended on the small Texas city of Corpus Christi for the first annual Fiesta de la Flor, a sold-out two-day music festival honoring Selena’s life and legacy.

Corpus Christi Caller Times Special Selena Section

Selena Quintanilla-Perez's enduring image will be that of a charismatic performer, a fiercely independent Hispanic woman, an achiever, a role model and a down-to-Earth neighbor. Her followers continue to view her as an inspiration who showed them what could be theirs with many saying they have set goals and are pursuing dreams because of her influence. The singer's legacy lies in her music and in the people - especially children - whose lives she touched. Often called the Queen of Tejano music, Selena was one of the most celebrated entertainers in Corpus Christi's history.

Selena Hologram Is 'Not About Replacing Selena'

"It's just something to help her legacy continue growing," Suzette Quintanilla tells Billboard.
"By no means is this something that's creepy or weird," Suzette told Billboard during a phone interview Wednesday (April 8). "We think it's something amazing. A lot of the new fans that did not get to experience what Selena was about hopefully will be able to get a sense of her with this new technology that's going to be coming out."
"I'm excited at the fact that she will be the first-ever and the fact that she's a Latina makes it even more awesome," says Suzette, adding that the technology is "so interesting and mind-blowing that we just felt as a family that this is definitely something we’d want them to do with Selena."
Suzette cautions that "it's not about replacing Selena in any shape, way or form; it's just something to help her legacy continue growing."

Selena Quintanilla's estate sues record label for digital royalties
The estate of Selena Quintanilla has sued the late pop star's record label UMG Recordings, Inc., alleging that the company shortchanged the estate of millions in digital royalties.
The lawsuit, filed March 31, in the U.S. District Court for the the Southern District of New York, claims that UMG Recordings violated two 1993 agreements by licensing digital music services, such as iTunes, to sell the Latin singer's music without providing the Selena's estate with half of the revenue.
Though the complaint does not list a dollar amount, It's said the company may have underaccounted the estate's share of digital sales by up to $3 million since July 1, 2009.
Selena entered the two 1993 agreements with SBK Records and Capital-EMI Latin Records, according to the lawsuit. Both companies, subsidiaries of music recording company EMI, were purchased and integrated with Universal Music Group during that company’s acquisition of EMI in 2012.

Marc Anthony y Carlos Vives recordaron a Selena

Marc Anthony recordó a la Reina del Tex-Mex y las vivencias que compartieron juntos.
"Siendo amiga, siendo colega, empezamos juntos.

Jennifer Lopez remembers Selena on 20-year anniversary of death

Jennifer Lopez as Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla in the 1997 biopic "Selena." (Rico Torres / Warner Bros.)
JLo, 45, said that the "Dreaming of You" singer and her performances actually had a hand in allowing her to pursue her successful music career.
"I sang in musicals before, but as part of a cast, never as a solo artist upfront or a recording artist," Lopez told the mag. "It made me realize, 'Don't neglect parts of yourself and let people put you in a box because you're an actress. You can do this, and you can also do that. Life is short, and you don't know what's going to happen. Go for your dreams and don't let anyone hold you back.'"
"It's like saying there's another James Dean or Marilyn Monroe," she said. "People like that don't come along every day. There is never going to be another Selena. And as far as music goes, that's what's beautiful about artistry. Somebody is going to come along and move the world in a different way."

How Selena Inspired Her Gay Impersonator to Bidi Bidi Bom Bom

Andrew Lucero learned all of Selena's iconic moves from YouTube videos.
Lucero differentiates the process of studying Selena as both a fan and an impersonator. The fan loves to watch the movie Selena and has seen it over 100 times, but that is for fun because he doesn’t want to mimic Jennifer Lopez's version of Selena.
Lucero, the impersonator, is a student of Selena with YouTube as his professor. He sets up Selena playing while he's transforming into Selena: "I'm hearing her laugh, I'm hearing her voice, and as I'm getting ready, I might not be watching it but I'm absorbing it — she's sinking into me." He sees himself as an as actor just like Jennifer Lopez because "it's the same type of studying as if I was doing the part for a show or a movie."

Selena's dad: Mixed feelings about fans marking star's death

"Of course I'm happy that, today, people remember Selena more than ever," Abraham Quintanilla III said via phone from his office in Corpus Christi. "But, as Jehovah's Witnesses, we don't celebrate deaths or birthdays, and we don't want people to think we're behind all the festivities.
"It's crazy. It grows every day with events everywhere, but we're not organizing them. Our family never got together every year on the day of her murder, because there's nothing to celebrate, and this year won't be the exception," he added. "We remember our daughter every single day. We don't need a special day to remember her."

20 Years After, Selena Lives On

Roger Gomez, with one of his Selena posters, operates LoveSelena.com, one of the longest-running Selena fan sites.
On Saturday, Gomez is hosting a tribute in Los Angeles, The #SelenaFanGathering. Chris Perez, who was married to Selena, is expected to attend.
"Every day, there's always something new," said Gomez, who lives in Santa Ana. "New photos are popping up every single day. "Selena lives through social media."
"No matter what news it is about Selena, no matter what she's mentioned in, or happens, it spreads like wildfire," he said. "Everybody is still so attached to her that they want to know what's going on as if she's alive."
"Believe it or not, rare photos pop up more than you think," Gomez said. "Although we're accustomed to certain images of her, there's never been a bad photo of Selena.
"No matter what, she looks so beautiful."

Jennifer Lopez Reflects on Why Selena Still Matters: She Moved the 'World in a Different Way'

Jennifer Lopez performs as Selena while filming the movie "Selena" in Texas in Sept. 1996.
Why do you think Selena is still so beloved 20 years after her death?
"The grace with which she handled the business, the grace with which she handled her life, the humor. Her spirit of loving what she did. Her sense of family. That's the tragedy of everything that happened and why she left such an imprint -- because she was gone way too soon." - Jennifer Lopez

Selena Fan Exhibit in Lake Jackson

Lake Jackson museum plays host to collection of Selena mementos.
Ask anyone who was alive in the 1990s who Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was, and you're sure to get an answer — or so conventional wisdom would have you believe. Strange as it may seem, not everyone remembers the Tejano music superstar, whose life was cut tragically short in 1995.
But the Lake Jackson Historical Museum, with the help of a private collector, has put some of the singer's iconic outfits on display, along with a trove of memorabilia, to remind locals of the life of one of Brazoria County’s most famous natives.
"There’s several items that were her clothing, her outfits," said museum director Robert Rule. "Some are replicas, some aren’t. Items from her boutiques they could have bought in the period. There’s a lot of memorabilia that will put you back in that time, get you thinking about it. A lot of it is objects from her performances."
"Normally we do Facebook posts about upcoming events," he said. "Usually it reaches about 300 people. This one reached 4,000. This is still close to the hearts of people, and they’re excited."
"It’s something we’ve been missing in our museum,” he said. “This is an important part of our history. It deserves to be discussed."

Remembering Selena's Houston Performance

The purple bodysuit. The disco medley. The beaming smile and shy wave.
Twenty years after her final RodeoHouston performance -- Feb. 26, 1995 -- those moments have, for many, become pop-culture cornerstones. Selena's fashion is seen in the bustiers and body-conscious curves of current pop stars.
That concert was released in 2001 on CD and DVD. A doll was also created wearing a replica of the purple outfit.
Music critic Rick Mitchell, who reviewed the 1995 show, said "Selena is Tejano's answer to Madonna, Janet Jackson and Gloria Estefan." But that's not quite right.
Selena was, and continues to be, very much her own kind of superstar. Selena por siempre!

Names bring 'fame' for some San Antonians
Dozens of locals live their days in the spotlight because they share a name with someone who is more famous -- people from pop music or politics, Hollywood or history.
Even a different spelling on her first name hasn’t kept Celina (pronounced "Selena") Quintanilla from being compared to another, more well-known woman from the music world. The UTSA student was just 2 when Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla-Perez was shot dead in 1995.
"I just always grew up with the movie, so that was my memory of Selena,” she said.
Now, she knows all about the singing sensation. Although her parents were fans of the more famous Selena, she said they did not purposely name her after the singer.

Latino Album Cover Artist Ruben Cubillos

Have you heard of Ruben Cubillos?
Juan Gabriel, Tortilla Factory, Ruben Ramos, Selena. These are just a few of the Latino artists Ruben Cubillos designed album covers for, a passion he found at a young age.
Today, Cubillos has created about 150 album covers for musical artists and icons like Little Joe Hernandez and Selena, including Selena’s famous cursive logo signature. "You have one frame to tell a story," Cubillos says, "so it’s got to be interesting enough to pull you in, and it really needs to tell you the story of the music that’s in it as well."
What was it like working with Selena?
"I met her when we were both performing and she was coming up in the regional Tejano scene. We kept in touch. After I graduated from art school, I worked with an ad agency working with Coca-Cola and they recruited Selena as a spokesperson. We later worked together on her first release for Capitol Records, her national breakout. You never know how friendships are going to blossom. … I once did a photo shoot with her in San Antonio. The way we shot her captured her when the sun is going down, the blue sky, the sun tearing into her. She looked like a goddess. She had never done a photo shoot before. She had on a lot of makeup and big hairdos. I told her, 'We're going to put you on this pedestal.'"

Remembering Selena on CBS 2 News LA

Nearly 20 Years After Her Tragic Murder, Rising Superstar Selena’s Legacy Is Remembered.
"After she passed away the outpouring of support from her fans. I don’t think any of us were prepared or knew how big she had become," said Chris Perez, Quintanilla’s guitarist who later became her husband.
"I’ve changed quite a bit since those days. Back then it was mainly a source of sadness and darkness for me. Now it’s kind of become light and happiness and remembering the good stuff," he recalled.
"She wasn’t like most people. She didn’t look at it as work," Perez said. "She was going after things she really loved. She started businesses: the salon, the clothing line, the boutique, clothing design, designing a perfume and was thinking about opening a business in Mexico all the while we are going on these tours, playing these shows and working on the mainstream record. She was non-stop."

Selena Doll Sells for Over $1000.00

Artist Noel Cruz has repainted and sold the one-of-a-kind Selena doll with striking resemblance to Tejano legend which brought in 41 eBay bids, closing with a winning bid of $1,025 submitted on Feb. 8.
Cruz took the mass-produced Selena doll, which was first sold in 1996, and repainted the doll’s face to portray a more accurate and striking resemblance to the late Tejano legend. According to the online auction listing, Cruz’s full facial repaint includes “three dimensional repaint/shading/highlighting on eyes, eyebrows and lips to fully transform the doll into the accurate and life-like realness of singing legend Selena Quintanilla.” The doll’s original hair was also given careful attention and was reworked as well. Cruz sealed his work with artist-grade acrylics and sealers, as any high-priced piece of art would be treated.
Cruz’s repainting of the Selena doll is not his first. His work extends to celebrities and characters ranging from Audrey Hepburn to Hunger Games’ Katniss Everdeen and is “highly regarded among collectors and artists alike,” according to the artist’s website: ncruz.com.

Anything for Salinas! Air Freshener

Ruben Dario Villa, a former Apple designer and San Jose artist announces the launch of www.fuchilafresheners.com, a website for Chicano/Latino pop-culture inspired line of air fresheners — Fúchila Fresheners.
Villa currently has six original designs including historical figures Frida Kahlo and Pancho Villa, pop icons Selena Quintanilla, Cantinflas, and Blue Demon, and finally iconic imagery like La Calavera.
The "Anything for Salinas!" freshener does not smell "como la flor" but will fill a "carcacha" with a cranberry orange scent.

Anything for Salinas!
Price: $4.99
Scent: Cranberry Orange. Smells like the Big Sticks Popsicles.

Selena Quintanilla, (April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995) the American singer-songwriter, was known as the "Queen of Tejano Music" as her beautiful voice and uncanny ability to entertain crowds spread across the US and Mexico. The Billboard Latin Music Hall of Famer was not shy about her choppy spoken-Spanish and often laughed it off using Spanglish to get her points across early on in her career. "The Mexican Madonna" was played by Jennifer Lopez in the movie Selena, which I am proud to say I have watched well into the double digits. Anything for Selena!

Sold Out!

We are proud to announce that Fuchila Fresheners is a #SelenaFanGathering sponsor!

Selena Quintanilla mentioned in Cosmo for Latinas online article: "The 14 Best Latin Songs You Forgot You Were Obsessed With"
BRB, off to listen to Bidi Bidi Bom Bom on repeat!
1. "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" by Selena. No list is complete without la reina herself. (The day someone forgets to put her on a list like this is the day you'll know the end of the world is nigh.) There are too many good songs to choose from ("Como la Flor!" "Amor Prohibido!" "Si Una Vez!"), so I'll leave you with what's considered her signature hit, 1994's "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom."
